Abstract. The article presents theoretical and methodological approaches to conducting sociological research in relation to relatives of convicts serving a sentence of imprisonment. This category of respondents, in Russian penitentiary sociology, is considered as an independent type (category) of socially useful connections of those sentenced to imprisonment. Based on this message, relatives should be considered by the administration of correctional institutions not only as one of the components of socially useful connections of convicts, but also as a subject of correctional influence. The main part of the article is devoted to the description of ways to obtain reliable information about the process of execution of punishment from relatives of convicts held in places of deprivation of liberty. The article pays attention to the need for psychological and pedagogical work with relatives of those sentenced to imprisonment.
