Abstract. The authors of the article consider personal names in the First Name Dictionary of the Tyumen Bukharians of the XIX — early XX centuries: one-, two-, three-syllable male personal names with the root Muhammad/Muhammet, variants of their «addition» with borrowed names, the position of the name Muhammad/Muhammet in the composition of complex names, the frequency of borrowed names as the «second» or «third» root in the name. The source for the study was the unexplored and unpublished to date handwritten monuments of writing — the Yambaevo Muslim metric books of the XIX — early XX centuries. Metric books are of great value, since they served as the only reliable set of data on the identity of a person in imperial Russia: they recorded acts of civil status — birth, marriage/divorce, death. In the Tobolsk county, the first Muslim metric books appeared in 1829. The period considered in the article of fixing acts of civil status in the mosques of Yambaevo (Embaevo) village is 72 years (the first book is dated 1835, the last book is dated 1907). At the present time, it has been possible to find and translate into modern Russian the scattered Yambaevo mosque books for only 18 years, but this, in our opinion, does not prevent the restoration of the First Name Dictionary of that period. The relevance of the study is substantiated by the analysis of complex male personal names containing the same root, extracted by the method of continuous sampling (64 units were identified by the authors). The derivational potential of male personal names is revealed, in which one of the roots is the Arabic name Muhammad/Muhammet: names with this root become a generating base for the formation of surnames with the corresponding composition of roots through the use of word-formation models and word-formation means of the Russian language.
