Abstract. The article is devoted to the problem of preserving architectural monuments on the territory of Moscow. The subject of the study are religious buildings, namely monasteries, monastery farmsteads and churches located on the territory of Meshchansky district. The source base of the study was Michurin’s map of 1739. In the course of the work the source and cartographic analysis was carried out, which made it possible to compile a list of historical monuments and compare the data with the modern map. The study of archival records and photographs made it possible to supplement the information obtained because of cartographic analysis. An overview of architectural monuments was made, statistics on the number of preserved and lost monuments was given, and the reasons for their disappearance were identified. A comparative analysis of the historical plan of Michurin 1739 with the modern map, which allowed identifying the dynamics of changes in the architectural appearance of the district. The results of the study showed that from the objects fixed in the XVIII century, only half of them have survived to our days. The main reasons for the loss of monuments were established — the transformation of urban objects after the revolution of 1917 and after the implementation of urban planning projects in the 1920s–1940s, including the General Plan of Moscow in 1935.
The work demonstrates an interdisciplinary approach combining cartographic analysis, open source research and digital image archives, and shows new possibilities for the study of urban history.
The data obtained have practical significance for urban planning policy, restoration activities and cultural study of Moscow. The authors emphasize the need for careful treatment of preserved monuments and the development of strategies for their integration into the modern urban environment.
