Abstract. The emerging new geopolitical conditions, the emergence of a multipolar world with new centers of political and economic influence, determine the demand not only for a strong functional state capable of protecting national security, but also for a strong cohesive society.

The involvement of Russia in the processes of globalization has revealed the need to search for conditions for the stable development of modern society and the leading motivating factors for uniting the efforts of people to solve socially significant problems. In the current conditions, the guarantee of survival and preservation of our country as a sovereign state is internal solidarity, the growth of patriotism and civic activity of society. «In order to bring peace closer, ensure stability and achieve victory, Russian society needs to consolidate», said V.V. Putin.

The purpose of this article is to conduct a theoretical and methodological analysis of the concept of «civic identity», determine its role in the socialization of the individual, and the main conditions for its formation and directions of development. The article emphasizes the importance of forming the civic identity of youth, noting its role in strengthening civil society and the future of the country. It is emphasized that identity is the result of the dialectical interaction between the individual and society; it is not complete and is formed throughout the individual’s life. Considering that values are formed in activity, in the process of interaction, cooperation, the authors come to the conclusion that a universal direction for the formation of an active civic position of an individual is the inclusion of the individual in volunteer activities. It is the solidary identity of citizens, embodied in volunteer activities, socially useful and approved by the state and society, that will become a factor in the consolidation of society, the formation of a stable civic identity, which, in the face of the challenges facing our state, will allow us to preserve its sovereignty and independence.
