Abstract. This scientific paper is part of a dissertation research. The article examines the linguistic side of the process of localizing a tourism web portal. To identify the linguistic tasks of intralingual localization, the research article conducted and described a comparative analysis of language material taken from the American and British versions of the Booking.com web portal. In order to clarify the findings and establish general and specific patterns of the linguistic side of intra- and interlingual localization, the research paper further provided a comparative analysis of two English versions with the German and Russian language versions. As a result of a comparative analysis, the author identified the main linguistic tasks of localization and the linguistic procedures arising from them: adaptation of the lexical apparatus (selection of the vocabulary most appropriate to the recipient’s perception); grammatical adaptation (morphology and syntax); cultural adaptation (date formats, time units). During the analysis, no differences were found in the list of linguistic procedures for intra- and interlingual localization. However, the nature of these procedures turned out to be largely different for interlingual localization. In the case of interlingual localization, adaptation of the lexical apparatus includes not only the replacement of lexical units with their direct correspondences, since, unlike intralingual localization, all lexical units are one way or another replaced by their corresponding ones in the target language. First of all, lexical adaptation is presented in the form of lexical-semantic transformations, which transform direct lexical matches into a lexical-semantic expression that is extremely consistent with the perception of its recipient. If during intralingual localization a significant part of grammatical adaptation consists of morphological changes associated with differences in the spelling of certain words, then in the case of interlingual localization it mainly comes down to the transformation of syntactic structures to ensure that the syntax of sentences corresponds to the norms of the target language. Cultural adaptation in the case of interlingual localization, in addition to a change in form, which is typical for intralingual localization, in many cases also includes a change in the semantic component, achieved through neutralization, explication or domestication of the semantic component of the original lexical unit.
