Abstract. The article describes the means of creating artistic expressiveness in the work of Jean Sibelius in the context of the composer’s embodiment of images and natural phenomena that create a special aesthetic space (the aesthetics of nature) of his works and determine their national flavor. The purpose of the study is to identify and systematize key images-symbols of natural phenomena that have an aesthetic impact on listeners and form a significant aesthetic component of the Finnish composer’s music. The study used general logical (induction, deduction, analysis, synthesis, interpretation, systematization, classification) and theoretical research methods: comparative analysis and cluster analysis, the use of which made it possible to identify semantic groups in sign-symbolic images. Еhe following clusters have been identified: spatial objects (water spaces, landscape), distribution area (plant world, animal world), geographical envelope and interaction between its components (weather and atmospheric phenomena, cyclical nature, human actions in the natural environment). The publication provides an overview of scientific sources by Russian and foreign authors on research topics in musicology, art history, and cultural studies. The symbolism of nature is considered from the perspective of musical aesthetics, semiotics of music, semantics, philosophical and musical hermeneutics. The article concludes that the originality and uniqueness of Finnish nature, as well as scenes from the «Kalevala» in the works of J. Sibelius, indicate a close relationship between the natural, epic and mythological components in his work and open up new prospects for interdisciplinary research. The article may be of interest to art historians, cultural experts, students and teachers of music universities, music teachers, undergraduates and graduate students in musical fields of study.
