Abstract. The article deals with semantic transformations of figurative parallelism as a way of representing symbolic meanings of dendronims poplar and maple in the language of Russian poetry of the XIX–XX centuries. Figurative parallelism is understood by the author as a structure in the context of the poetic text, including the names of trees as objects of symbolization and abstract concepts as symbolic images.

As a result of the conducted research two main schemes of formation of symbolic meanings within figurative parallelism are defined: (1) a green tree (as an image of an ideal landscape) – immortality (life) – transience and frailty of human life; (2) withered (falling) leaves – withering of a tree – transience of youth of the lyrical hero.

A chronological analysis of the poetic contexts of the XIX–XX centuries allowed to reveal the semantic transformation of data schemas of figurative parallelism: poplar as an element of an ideal landscape – life – the transience of human life; wilted (deciduous) leaves of maple and poplar – wilting tree (leaf) – the transience of life lyric hero; the royal falling leaves – withering tree – the destruction of the Russian Empire; maple over the coffin – privacy cover for lovers – the continuation of life; topol – fullness of life – happiness and harmony of the lyric hero; topol – civilian life – war.

Semantic mechanisms of symbolic meanings formation within the framework of figurative parallelism are established: metonymy according to the transfer scheme «sign-phenomenon»; anthropomorphic general poetic metaphor «tree – man»; individual metaphors.

It is proved that the symbolic meanings «poplar/maple – transience of life», «poplar/maple – immortality», represented by the formulas of figurative parallelism in Russian poetry, go back to mythopoetic imagery and folk poetic parallelism.

It is revealed that the productivity of figurative parallelism in the representation of symbolic meanings of dendronims poplar and maple is associated with the psychologization of the Russian poetic landscape.

Keywords: Russian poetry; dendronims; figurative parallelism; psychological parallelism; symbol; tropes; poetic image
