Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of the creative path of Ouyang Yuqian (1889–1962), who had a significant influence on the development of theatrical art in China. In the article, in the logic of a retrospective chronotope, his creative path is analyzed on the basis of an autobiographical narrative in the form of a travelogue.
It is shown that his personality was formed in a difficult historical period under the influence of multidirectional shaping factors, among which the influence of traditional Chinese culture dominated. The concept of the study is based on the idea to find out the dynamics of the formation of Ouyang Yuqiang’s thoughts about culture and art, which subsequently formed a system of cultural views and determined practical actions for their implementation. At the first stage of the study, the information presented in the autobiographical narrative in the form of a travelogue was systematized. Based on the «movement» criterion, characteristic of travelogue as a literary genre, six periods of creativity dedicated to the acting activity of Ouyang Yuqiang are identified, and their characteristics are given on the basis of autobiographical descriptions. The second stage of the study is devoted to the analysis of periods of active acting activity from the first (in childhood) to the last performance as a singer of the Peking Opera. It is shown that the artist’s childhood passion for theater, in particular Peking Opera, remained with him throughout his life. It has been established that living in Japan did not have a significant impact on the formation of his aesthetic views, with the exception of positions associated with familiarity with European theatrical culture. For 15 years, Ouyang Yuqian was a singer of the Peking Opera and combined this activity with work as a screenwriter and director, which, after finishing his acting career at the Peking Opera, determined his professional activities.
