Abstract. Fake news on social media around the world rose to prominence in the 2016 US presidential election, causing people to question science, true news, and social norms. Like social networks themselves, the spread of fake content in them, as well as the increasing impact of such content on part of society, are a consequence of the globalization of social communications. Fake news increasingly influences societal values, can change opinions on critical issues, and redefine facts, truths, and beliefs. The article presents an attempt to analyze the extent to which fake news is already changing society, public perception of information, the meaning of fake news in the modern Internet environment. Considering the well-known cases of the spread of fake news, the effect of dividing societies by differentiating true (real) news from fake news becomes quite definite. I think this is due to a split in social values. A significant role in assessing the reasons for the spread of fakes, apparently, should be attributed to the widespread use of social bot technologies and trolling. In general, the article gives an idea of how significant the phenomenon of the spread of fake news in social networks has become in the modern Internet environment and, accordingly, the importance of efforts to limit such spread and neutralize the impact of fakes on the public. The prospects for such a restriction are connected, in the author’s opinion, primarily with the systematic efforts of companies that own social network platforms, as well as with future breakthroughs in promoting healthy social communication practices on the Internet among users.
