Abstract. Yuvan Shestalov belongs to the group of outstanding writers of the North, whose creative way began in the Soviet years. His multi-faceted work clearly shows an original approach to the study and coverage of the spiritual and cultural heritage of the Mansi people. Throughout his creative activity, the writer focused on the traditions of folklore, which embody national aesthetics and express the diversity of styles. Myth and folklore sources are an integral part of Yu. Shestalov’s creative method, which allowed him to raise and solve philosophical and aesthetic issues on an increasingly global scale.

The interaction of his creative work with native folklore is shown, among other things, in the use of all genre groups. Of all the variety of folklore genres, in the article the author is limited to considering the writer’s appeal only to myths as the most frequently genre in the works by Yu. Shestalov. The author of the article considers the nature of mythological borrowings, which are steadily preserved throughout the creative activity of the writer. The relevance of the work is determined by the objectives of modern literary study, where the study of the interaction of literature with the mythological tradition occupies an important place, because contextual research will not only allow a new assessment of the literary heritage of Yu. Shestalov, but will also contribute to a deeper and meaningful understanding of national culture as a whole. It is important that for the writer the appeal to the myth, in addition to literary, has a great historical and cultural significance. Mythological elements (representation of customs, rites, rituals) play an important role in preserving of the oral and poetic heritage of the Mansi ethnos, because it allows us to judge its imagination and intuition, individual and social psychology, and the features of the worldview.
