Abstract. The article is devoted to the study of modern student youth leisure, which has its distinctive features. The attention is drawn to the transformation in the understanding of leisure as social, historical and cultural development of societies in connection with the development of modern communication technologies and massification of culture. The typology of leisure activities is given in general and the attention is drawn to the features characteristic of leisure activity by modern youth. The authors concentrate on such a type of leisure activity as visiting museums, the sociocultural functions of which contribute to the transmission of values from generation to generation, the preservation of historical memory, the formation of cultural capital and identity. Currently, museums are making all kinds of efforts to attract, motivate and expand the audience, especially its youth part, to visit museums. In the course of the study, the authors operationally use sociological works on youth problems, written by famous Russian sociologists Zubok Yu.A. and Chuprov V.I., which confirm that visiting museums is part of the leisure activity of modern youth. Along with this, the authors cite the data of their own empirical study conducted by a structured survey among students of various areas of professional training of six universities in the South of Russia. The empirical data obtained show that students consider museums in the context of leisure activity, with aesthetic, cultural and historical components being the most attractive to them. The expansion of domestic tourism contributes to the formation of interest in the specifics of the development of various regions of Russia. However, the data obtained show a very negative trend in terms of organizing visits to museums, since the number of students visiting museums decreases after entering a university, which makes us think about organizing educational work in higher educational institutions.
