Abstract. The article is devoted to the work of the artist D.I. Kuznetsov, who formed and developed the traditions of the realistic school of landscape painting in Biysk and the Altai region. The study analyzes the paintings by D.I. Kuznetsov from the collection of the Art Department of the Biysk Local History Museum named after V.V. Bianki, which were presented at the exhibition «The Singer of the Altai» dedicated to the 135th anniversary of the artist, held in October 2025 at the Exhibition Hall of Biysk. The article pays significant attention to the study of the features of realistic painting presented in the territory of the Greater Altai. The article is devoted to the problem of traditions and continuity in Kuznetsov’s work. The relevance of this study is due to a number of aspects: the need for a serious assessment of the artist’s place and his achievements in the history of fine art in Biysk and Altai. The purpose of the work is to identify the features of the works of D.I. Kuznetsov, who developed the traditions of the Russian realistic school of painting in Altai. Research objectives: to analyze the work of D.I. Kuznetsov; to characterize the specifics of imagery and pictorial-plastic language in the works. The methods of figurative-stylistic and comparative art analysis were used to analyze the paintings by Dmitry Ivanovich Kuznetsov. A cultural-historical approach and an iconographic method were used.

The authors of the article note that the basis of D.I. Kuznetsov’s paintings is realism as a creative method and beauty as the ultimate goal of the image. The artist’s poetic and figurative perception of nature allows him to depict the beauty of his beloved Altai region, including its mountains, rivers, lakes, and forests, in lyrical and epic landscapes.

The article reflects the important stages of D.I. Kuznetsov’s life and work. The paper draws conclusions about the connection of Kuznetsov’s creative heritage with the traditional Russian realistic school of painting. The data obtained are of practical importance for an in-depth study of the art history of Altai and Biysk.
