Abstract. The article is devoted to the metaphors analysis as a means of symbol representation in the works of L.N. Tolstoy. The research relevance is determined by further development of the metaphor theory, supplementing it with new provisions obtained and outlined as a result of empirical observations. This article is also a continuation of the complex analysis of through metaphorical images in the artistic texts of L.N. Tolstoy. The metaphor study as the symbol manifestation in the author’s work will allow us to get a more complete picture of the writer’s original language phenomenon. The study establishes that metaphor is a linguistic representation of a symbol. Metaphor is a distorted representation of reality, allowing us to understand and perceive the world in new, unusual angles. Metaphor can be a bridge between the familiar and the new, serving as a key to understanding the deep meanings of the works of fiction. It is a verbal reflection of a symbol that combines several meanings and opens new facets of truth. The academic novelty of the research is determined by the fact that for the first time the comprehension of metaphor as a manifestation of a symbol in the works of fiction by L.N. Tolstoy, united by the theme of family, has been undertaken. At the final stage, the authors noted that L.N. Tolstoy’s metaphors have a deep symbolic meaning, so it is necessary to consider them not in the microcontext, but within the macrocontext. This contributes to a deeper understanding of the thematic commonality of the selected texts and insight into the author’s worldview; it generates a new interpretation of the writer’s works. The metaphorical symbol serves as a means of conveying abstract concepts and ideas through the use of more concrete images and associations — objects and subject areas.
