Abstract. Many works of philosophers, psychologists and sociologists are devoted to a phenomenon of «success», the ethics of success and the success aspiration in different social groups. However, success itself as a special type of activity that is emerging in our country practically remains outside the framework of empirical analysis. The article traces the genesis of the concept of «success» from Epicurus to the present day.
In the course of the analysis of the formation of the Eastern and Western traditions of success, it was shown that culture is the most important determinant of this concept as well as its refraction in social action. Critical consideration of success in Russian scientific discourse in the context of the real situation in society and the Russian cultural tradition made it possible to give a clear definition of success as the subject of empirical sociological research. The substantiation of the choice of the empirical object of research, the methods of its identification and analysis are given.
