Abstract. The article analyzes the lexical means by which the image of chess as the central image of the novel is created in the novel The Queen’s Gambit by W. Tevis. The article shows how chess vocabulary helps the author not only to show the reader the world in which chess players live and create the image of the main character of the novel, but also convey the complex relationships of the characters through their perception of chess. There has been no previous research into this aspect of the novel. Using the field method, the article describes chess vocabulary in the novel. The author of the article shows the structure of this lexical-semantic field, identifies its core, near and far periphery. The stylistic heterogeneity of the vocabulary included in the described lexical-semantic field is noted, its composition is considered, as well as the connection of these lexical units with the expression of the author’s assessments and connotative meanings. The article also shows the role of metaphor in the system of chess vocabulary of the novel, mainly the war metaphor, originating in the etymology of chess concepts and developed by the author in the descriptions of chess games and their perception by the main character of the novel. The conducted analysis showed that chess vocabulary, widely represented in the analyzed novel by W. Tevis and having a complex organization, is one of the important means serving both to create the atmosphere of the book and to characterize the characters, and to convey the author’s point of view and attitude to the events depicted.
