Abstract. At the end of the XX — beginning of the XXI centuries, wushu, like many other ethno-national bodily-motor, psychophysical systems, is involved in the process of «sportization», that is, becoming another new sport. Having achieved considerable success on the path of sportization, wushu acquires all the necessary and sufficient (organizational, social, economic, political) grounds not only to obtain the status of an Olympic sport, but also to become part of the disciplines of the Olympic program. Many ideologists of Wushu and Olympism predict a great future for Chinese sports. And with good reason.

Along with this, some authors who stand on conservative positions defend the identity and cultural value of traditional Chinese wushu, fearing the loss of mental depth (for example, the primacy of the spiritual over the physical) and national identity.

In order to resolve this dispute from a scientific standpoint, according to the authors, a deep historical and cultural analysis of both the Wushu culture and the cultural agonal and sporting traditions of the peoples of the ancient Mediterranean, that is, the geographical region that became the birthplace of European sports and the Olympic Games, is necessary. Accordingly, this analysis is expanded in the presented material.

Keywords: wushu culture; sportization; agonal-sports cultural tradition; Olympic Games; adaptation
