Abstract. This article is an analytical study to identify irony in non-verbal modes within a literary text. Irony, as a rule, is a multidimensional phenomenon which has declared itself not as an auxiliary tool, but as a complete separate philosophical and aesthetic concept, only at the beginning of the last century. However, despite the erosion of the boundaries of its interpretation, one cannot overlook the enormous significance that irony has both on the reader’s personality and on the literary text itself from the point of view of linguistics. Our task is to find those non-verbal means that the author uses to systematically demonstrate the tinted aspects of the ironic meaning – for this purpose, the works of the Russian writer and playwright A.P. Chekhov are involved in this material.

In the process of working on literary works, the implicit nature of irony was repeatedly confirmed, due to its belonging to the semantic field of the phenomenon of comic on the one hand, and on the other, the spread in the era of so-called neo-romanticism, distinguished by the eclecticism of artistic narratives. A picture of irony is compiled as a multifunctional way of expressing the author’s attitude to his characters, to their lifestyle and ideological paradigm, which exist directly in everyday culture. The immanent determinism of non-verbal manifestations of irony is indicated by the style of verbal exposition, which encompasses a variety of related means of expression – epithets, metaphors, allegories, etc. To determine the presence of irony, the author of the article analyzed such artistic texts by A.P. Chekhov as “For Apples” (1880), “Chameleon” (1884), “Zinochka” (1887), “Princess” (1889), “Gooseberry” (1898), which allows us to talk about its greatest concentration in short stories.

We can say that A.P. Chekhov was ahead of the era of modernism, which adopted the irony to represent the changes in the prevailing type of rationality dictated by enlightened and romantic ideologies. Its essence, as a rule, was based on the «removal» of academic principles in the space of art and the provision of freedom of presentation of a personal worldview – it should be noted that A.P. Chekhov’s listed features are mainly observed in diminutive-affectionate and improperly-direct speech circulations with systemic character along with non-verbal manifestations.
