Abstract. The article considers the problem of forming a model of patriotic education as part of the spiritual and moral development of young people in higher education. The authors reveal the essence of the concepts of «patriotic education» and «spiritual and moral development», justifying the relationship between them. Particular attention in this matter is paid to the challenges of society affecting the values of the younger generation, as well as the role of higher education in the formation of feelings of civic responsibility and love for their small homeland. In addition, the article proposes a structural and functional model of patriotic education, consisting of individual components (target, value-semantic, substantive, organizational-activity and performance-evaluation), and the principles of its implementation (consistency, continuity, integration of educational and extracurricular activities, dialogue of cultures and subjectivity of students). The contents of the normative legal acts regulating the patriotic education of children and youth were studied and summarized. After analyzing and studying this problem, it was found that the effectiveness of patriotic education directly depends on the involvement of students of higher educational institutions in socially significant and active activities: contests, Olympiads, actions, forums, patriotic dictators, volunteer, public and research activities. As an example, the authors of the article cited the activities of the Michurinsky State Agrarian University on patriotic education, the formation of a sense of civic identity. In conclusion, it was concluded that it is necessary to harmonize the development of the individual as a whole and create a stable system of spiritual and moral values in the youth environment in particular.
