Abstract. Social movements are part of civil society and, of course, play an important role in the political sphere of public life in any country. In this regard, they have been the object of close study by domestic and foreign scientists for many years. Rapid changes in society give rise to new hypotheses, theories, and conclusions regarding this social phenomenon, which requires constant collection and analysis of information regarding social movements.

The article examines models for studying social movements, provides a classification of paradigms accepted by the scientific community, and highlights the main approaches to their classification. The theories of mass society and collective behavior, theories of relative deprivation, theories of resource mobilization, M. Olson’s theory of collective action, conflict theory, E. Giddens’ theory of structuration, modern cognitive theories, neo-institutionalism, concepts of new social movements are analyzed.

The author focuses on the study, ordering, and structural analysis of theoretical concepts affecting the evolution of the phenomenon of social movements.

When writing the article, methods of comparison, description, and analysis of theoretical literature were used.

It is concluded that theoretical approaches to the study of social movements have many similar aspects. The object of the study is the individual, individual consciousness, personal interests and ideas of members of the movement, dissatisfaction with forms of existence, social reality. It has been established that all theories have one object of study, but when studying it, each researcher applies his own specific approach.

The article can serve to form a holistic understanding of the phenomenon of social movements; its materials can be used in educational courses, as part of sociological and political science analyses.
