Abstract. The meaning of patriotism from the standpoint of sociology of management is analyzed in the article. The author proposes to analyze the characteristic features of military-patriotic activity as a process, consisting not only of military-patriotic education of citizens. The author proposes to look at the problem of military-patriotic activity more broadly, as military-patriotic training of citizens, the components of which are: military-patriotic education, military-patriotic training, and personal development. Preparation as a process of creating the conditions for the successful fulfilment of the tasks set for society. The components of patriotism are shown, as well as its economic, social, political and spiritual foundations. A system analysis of patriotism is carried out, in the course of which its characteristic features as a complex social system are shown. The process of development of patriotism to its highest form, to the level of citizens’ self-consciousness is predicted. The main objective of military-patriotic training of citizens is noted, as well as the necessity of including an individual in patriotic activities in order to consolidate the final formation of personal patriotic convictions and aspiration for patriotic behaviour. Patriotism is seen as a spiritual formation, a component of social consciousness. The controlled system of patriotic views, feelings, principles of behaviour of individuals and groups, which are ideal motives for actions to defend the Fatherland, is shown. Such function of patriotism as rallying the society is noted. the article reflects the conclusions drawn as a result of theoretical retrospective study of historical sources of literature of the past. On this basis the elements which patriotism incorporates are reflected. The role of works of Russian writers, poets, thinkers and their importance in formation of national self-consciousness of Russian people is noted.
