The concept «Way» as a marker of the textual category of space in A.A. Fadeev’s novel «The Rout»

Abstract. The article is devoted to the disclosure of the textual category of space in A.A. Fadeev’s novel «The Rout». It is established that the text not only shows fragments of reality and draws a general spatial picture of the world, that the textual space is a necessary content component of the work, and that it is impossible to create a text outside this connection. The category of space in the novel has precise topographical characteristics that allow us to outline the path of the detachment’s retreat through the coordinates of the text space. Toponyms have a huge impact on the narrative, on the one hand, painting a complete picture of the battle route, and on the other hand, forming the characteristic Far Eastern regional flavour of the novel. In the language representation of the concept of space as a category of the text, action verbs are primarily represented by semantic categories of verbs of movement, movement demonstrate the dynamics of space, that is, the active expression of the path of retreat of the partisans. The analysis of text fragments from the point of view of their semantics and the use of grammatical means forming the textual space shows that in the novel «The Rout» the main element forming the text is the objective space. Space in the novel is an interweaving of the development of events, psychology of characters, natural phenomena in the text, the organic whole of which makes up the spatial colour of A.A. Fadeev’s work. The gloomy and dark spatial colouring constructed by the writer is an important means of forming an oppressive atmosphere from the middle to the later part of the novel, and in this way A.A. Fadeev focuses attention on the cruelty and devastation of the Civil War.
