Abstract. The article deals with the problem of selecting a target English language model for teaching and learning transnational communication of nonnative English speakers who do not share both a common first language and a common culture. It is argued that a prerequisite for intercultural communication is the intercultural communicative competence of its participants, which is defined as relationships, knowledge, skills and abilities that allow representatives of different cultures to interact and understand their multiple cultural affiliations. The purpose of this article is to present an argument in favour of the fact that the model of teaching English should be built on the basis of the skills and abilities of intercultural communicative competence to be mastered by a potential participant in transnational communication. The author claims that English as an international language neither offers nor supports any particular variety, therefore the target teaching and learning model should be interpreted as a means to bring up understanding of the heterogeneous nature of English used in intercultural communication. The scientific novelty of the article lies in the fact that an approach is proposed to build up communicative competence in English which is not only limited to the native speaker culture, but also prepared to fit manifold contexts of intercultural communication. As a result, it is concluded that the target English teaching and learning model should consist in mastering not native speaker linguistic and cultural resources but intercultural communicative competence.
