Abstract. In this article the author analyzes the activities of a prominent scientist-Turkologist Vasily Vasilyevich Radlov in the field of studying the phonetics of Turkic languages, in particular the Tatar language. The purpose of this study is to analyze and evaluate his work on phonetics «Vergleichende Grammatik der nördlichen Türksprachen. Erster Teil. Phonetik der nördlichen Türksprachen», which examines a wide range of issues of Tatar phonetics: the characteristic of the sound composition in comparison with other Turkic languages is given, the patterns of the use of some sounds are revealed, the issues of synharmonism and stress are investigated. The relevance of this research is to identify the historical value of this monograph, its significance for our time from a linguistic and cultural point of view.
