Some peculiarities of nonverbal behavior of English vloggers

Abstract. The article discusses the peculiarities of nonverbal behavior of English-speaking vloggers acting in the “review” genre. The study is built on an extensive experimental corpus with a total volume of about 300 minutes; speech samples taken from Internet sources (YouTube channels) were studied in the course of an auditory and visual analysis. We analyzed the records of these video-blogs for the period of 2016–2018.

In this paper, it was possible for us to explore such peculiarities of nonverbal behavior as facial expressions, gestures, posture, gaze direction (duration and frequency of gaze). As a result of a comprehensive study of the non-verbal behavior of vloggers, it was possible to identify both general universal characteristics, and individual features inherent only in this informant. Despite the fact that the data obtained testifies to the variety of forms of self-representation of vloggers of the “review” genre, all of them are united by a set of features that makes it possible to identify the affiliation of these individuals to the same professional group.

For video-bloggers, an active use of hand gestures and facial expressions is quite typical. Upright posture of the vlogger speaks about their confidence and interest in the material submitted. It is equally important to observe a long-term eye contact, which helps to build a bridge with the target audience. After analyzing the features of nonverbal behavior of some English vloggers, we can draw the following conclusions: the active employment of an active nonverbal behavior strategy can complement or reinforce the message of the speaker, besides, it reveals the true intentions, feelings and emotions which the vloggers want to share with the viewers of their video-blog. All in all, it indicates the level of their professionalism.
