Abstract. The article is devoted to the topical issue of modern linguistics — the problem of studying and describing the functional words of the Russian language, namely particles. The object of the study is the particle literally in its characteristic uses with components with the value of quantity. The semantic, pragmatic, syntagmatic specificity of this unit is considered. Based on the analysis of 650 facts of the use of the particle, obtained by the method of continuous sampling in the main and oral subcorpuses of the NCRL, regular ways of expressing components with a quantity value, including an inaccurate quantity, were identified, the possibilities of explicating the quantity estimate by the parameters ‘little/many’ and ‘good/ bad’ in context. It has been established that, firstly, the variability of the position literally in relation to the marked component is insignificant: with a typical preposition, postposition and distance in oral speech are noted; secondly, the use of a particle as an indicator of understatement is typical, since there are few cases of functioning as an indicator of exaggeration (no more than 2.5 % of the total number of such uses). Taking into account a number of approaches to the interpretation of semantics, an assessment of the considered usages in the normative aspect is literally given: restrictions on the compatibility of a particle are determined by pragmatic meanings that are literally introduced into the statement; cases of incompatibility violations were identified and the causes of violations were determined; the tendency of functioning, outlined in modern speech, is fixed literally with components with the meaning of the exact amount. The conducted research makes it possible to clarify the idea of the functioning of the word literally in the modern Russian language.

The study was conducted on the material of the texts of the National Corpus of the Russian Language (hereinafter NCRL) — (ruscorpora.ru).
