Abstract. This article presents a comprehensive study of the concept pioneer in the linguistic picture of the world of the representatives of Russian culture. The relevance of such research is largely explained by the need of the modern linguistic science to study the problems of reality reflection, fixation and representation in the linguistic picture of the world.

Different lexicographic sources served as the material for our research. They helped to identify a generalized prototype of the concept and all essential features that reflect its perception. The main methods included the historical-etymological, definitional analysis that illustrated the relevant features of the concept, while the analysis of associative fields gave the opportunity to describe the connections formed in the minds of Russian representatives.

A detailed analysis of the concept content, based on the data taken from various historical dictionaries, allowed to reveal the etymology of the studied concept. The semantic components were derived on the basis of the explanatory dictionaries and dictionaries of the word compatibility, while the value-estimated characteristics were considered by analyzing the associative fields. A consistent review of vocabulary definitions made it possible to reveal the nominative field of the concept and identify its most stable characteristics. The material from the Associative Dictionaries allowed to see how the nuclear features identified during the lexicographic analysis coincide with the associative connections that exist in the minds of the Russian representatives.

In conclusion, the author speaks about the dynamism and variability of the studied concept, which can change and vary due to the influence of various historical events that took place in the Russian society.
