Abstract. The article is devoted to the study of the image of the city of Volgograd in the ideas of youth. The aim of the work is to determine the specifics of the existing image of the city among the youth of Volgograd. Of particular interest for the study are semantic meanings associated with the image of the city, in which the emotional attitude and individual understanding of the urban space are revealed. The main research method was the architectural semantic differential «City». The sample consisted of university students from Volgograd and Moscow aged 18 to 25 years (32 live in Volgograd, 30 people from Moscow, only 62 people). Further, the research results were processed using methods of mathematical statistics (Student t-test, one-way analysis of variance) and analyzed. The main findings of an empirical study are as follows. Firstly, differences in the image of the city in the ideas of the youth of Volgograd and Moscow were revealed. Volgograd youth describes the city through certain dynamic (monotonous, constant, sluggish); visual (dirty) and emotional (calming, uncomfortable, repulsive, weak) characteristics. These characteristics are “typical” (unique) for a given city. Secondly, it was determined that the desire to change the city is connected with a certain image of this city; thirdly, urban youth of Volgograd to a greater extent showed a desire to change their place of residence. In the conclusion, recommendations on the modernization of urban space are presented, the main purpose of which involves the transformation of the current image of the city among youth in a more positive and attractive way.
