Abstract. The purpose of the study is the work of the great symbolist poet of the Silver Age K.D. Balmont. In his work, a little-studied topic is the culture of India with its religious teachings, namely Buddhism, which is the relevance of this study. Buddhism is a world religion that originated in India. Balmont studied the religious books of Buddhism: Rigveda, Atharvaveda, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, Suttapitaka, and made translations: Ashvaghosha. The Life of the Buddha, Kalidasa’s drama «Sakuntala», «Malyavika and Agnimitra» and «Urvashi Obtained by Courage» and other translations.

The methodology of the work is based on synchronic, structural and functional, biographical, historical and cultural methods. In the course of the work, the following were considered: the culture of India and the religious teaching of Buddhism. The influence of Indian culture on the worldview and creativity of K.D. Balmont is substantiated and proved. It is concluded that the culture of India inspired K.D. Balmont to write poems, travel notes, letters, essays. New metaphysical images were created: the Absolute, the One, the sacrifice of the Buddha, renunciation, the sacred Bodhi tree, deathly peace, the calm wisdom of the Buddha, oblivion in infinity. The theoretical significance of the research lies in a new looks at the problem of cultural and religious life in India, through the prism of K.D. Balmont’s work. His translations and essays show us a strong cultural connection with the religion of Buddhism.
