Abstract. This article examines the structural and substantive characteristics of business memoirs as a subgenre of memoir literature, using the memoirs of American entrepreneurs from the late 19th to early 21st centuries as a reference. The increased popularity of business memoirs among readers over the past two decades allows us to confirm the relevance of this subgenre. The aim of the work is to determine the place of business memoirs as a genre modification in the theory of memoir text.
The use of a cultural studies approach allows us to analyze business memoirs taking into account the cultural specifics of the American business community. A philological approach, in turn, allows us to establish the position of business memoirs within the system of memoir literature. In this regard, the article examines the historical and cultural preconditions for the development of business memoirs. Through a typological analysis of the specific features of the memoir genre, the key typological characteristics are identified; using a comparative method, business memoirs were characterized within the context of memoir theory.
The study identified the prerequisites for the emergence of business memoirs as a genre modification, as well as a system of stable characteristics of memoir texts. Specific properties of American business memoirs were identified, including discourse, narrative dominant, modification status, distinctive features, and basic form. The practical value of this study lies in the application of its findings to the teaching of historical and cultural disciplines, as well as in the development and delivery of specialized courses devoted to the literary and cultural history of the United States. The authors associate further research prospects with a comparative analysis of English-language business memoirs (particularly from the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and other countries), which will allow them to determine the national specifics of this subgenre.
Keywords: business memoirs; memoir literature; genre modification; American entrepreneurs; typological characteristics; Puritan ethics; narrative dominant
