Abstract. This article examines interethnic communication as a key factor determining the development vector of modern multiethnic societies and as a factor in the transformation of ethnocultural diversity from a potential source of conflict into a resource for social development. Using systemic, institutional, and communicative approaches, the mechanisms by which communication influences social harmony are analyzed. The authors examine the dual nature of ethnic diversity: while serving as a potential resource for generating social capital and enriching culture, in the absence of constructive mechanisms for interaction, it becomes a source of tension and conflict.

An analysis of the mechanisms by which interethnic communication influences intergroup tensions and social harmony allows us to conclude that interethnic communication can contribute to strengthening social harmony by reducing stereotyping and prejudice through positive intergroup contact, fostering a common national identity through a dialogue of cultures, and studying the institutional and communicative barriers to interethnic interaction, including linguistic, psychological, and institutional barriers, as well as the role of social institutions in managing interethnic relations.

The scientific discussion section of the article examines the reductionist understanding of social harmony as the absence of intergroup conflict and proposes a three-level model of communicative integration in a multi-ethnic society (informational, value-based, and behavioral). Key factors for successful interethnic communication are identified: an institutional environment of trust, equality between communicants, shared goals, cultural codes of trust, and a media-educational environment. The authors formulate practical recommendations for ethnonational government bodies on harmonizing interethnic relations and outline prospects for further research on this issue.
