Abstract. The preservation of the language, traditions and culture of peoples against the backdrop of a trend towards raising the status of ethno-national cultures is a key guideline for the state national policy. Understanding traditions and national peculiarities as agents of sociocultural stabilization calls for understanding the factors of preservation and reproduction of ethnocultural and linguistic diversity in society. This problem takes on great importance when we talk about the driving forces that influence the preservation of the culture and language of indigenous small-numbered peoples. As part of the study of various ethnic groups, this component is of particular interest due to its originality and uniqueness. In the presented article, the factors of preservation and reproduction of the language and culture of indigenous small-numbered peoples are studied (on the example of the Kumandins living in the Altai Krai). The authors identified and analyzed various factors that can influence these processes: objective and subjective, internal and external. The article analyzes various approaches to the definition of the concept of «ethnos», concludes about the necessary conditions for the reproduction of the most important features of an ethnos: language and culture. Considering the vectors of interaction between civilization and archaic ethnic culture, the authors refer to various relations between ethnic groups and nations. The patterns obtained allowed us to draw conclusions about the driving forces for the preservation and reproduction of the language and culture of the Kumandin people. In the article, the authors make a conclusion about the dominance of internal factors of self-preservation of ethnic identity (on the example of a small-numbered indigenous people — the Kumandins) over external factors influencing ethnogenesis.
