Abstract. The article is devoted to the ethnic diaspora as a mechanism of social communication. The author attempts to provide theoretical material for the analysis of the concepts of «Diaspora» and «Ethnic diaspora», defines the main functions of the ethno-national community and the specifics of the diaspora as a socio-cultural community. Since the diaspora is an entity that unites within itself representatives of ethnocultural traditions and speakers of a single language, it can affect the educational process of foreign students who come from the country of origin to Russia to receive education. Under these conditions, students need special support, and external factors (relations with Russian-speaking students and teachers, foreign-language and foreign-cultural environment) form the greatest need for interaction with their compatriots. The author reveals the features of the ethnic diaspora as a subject of social communications and highlights the factors that characterize the diaspora as a part of the educational process and environment. The author interprets the empirical data obtained as a result of a sociological study, the participants of which are foreign students studying at a Russian university and sharing their experience of integration into the educational process, where the ethnic diaspora becomes one of the communicative links. It is concluded that the role of the diaspora in the multicultural educational space is gradually increasing, as evidenced by the involvement of foreign students in diaspora communities. The main goal is to preserve their cultural identity, language and traditions, interact with compatriots and receive assistance in effective and less traumatic adaptation to new socio-cultural and educational conditions. However, students are also focused on building strong ties with Russian-speaking students and faculty. They promote cultural exchange and create favorable conditions for multicultural dialogue.
