Abstract. The subject of the study are approaches to the consideration of the category of «life difficulties». The authors analyze various aspects of such categories as “complexity”, “difficulty”, “life difficulty”. The logic of manifestation of life difficulties is indicated, their interdependence with difficulties is shown. The authors identify the types of restrictions of human social activity, which cause difficulties. Among them, such as: the scale of the deployment of constraints of difficulty, time of action, restrictions of social action, the nature of restrictions, the type of human activity, the need for support and assistance at different levels, etc. During the writing of the article, the following research methods were used: theoretical analysis, modeling, synthesis, comparison, formulation of conclusions, etc. The article concluded that the manifestation of difficulty (based on objective complexity) is individual, depending on the depth of emotional reactions and experiences. In the process of vital activity, the complexity is endowed with a specific subjective component through its perception, evaluation, and rethinking. The complexity, acquiring the subjective component, is transformed into difficulty. If the formation of a relationship is accompanied by experience, emotional stress, then the difficulty goes into the category of difficulties. Difficulties affecting values, cognitive interests, motivational processes acquire the status of life difficulties.
