Abstract. In this article, the author shows the main characteristics of Muslim immigration, as well as the evolution of relations with the host society, emerging conflicts, and the integration of Muslims into European society. In addition, the article examines the forms of adaptation and integration of Muslim immigrants at the local level, as well as the sociocultural requirements of society generated in this process and related to the practice of Islam in a non-Muslim context. The author considers the cultural aspect of the integration of migrants as one of the most important, since it is in the field of religious and cultural differences that the root of the problems that European society has faced in the conditions of increasing migration flows lies. The need for successful cultural integration of a huge number of people belonging to a community far from European culture is being brought to the fore, which has become a serious challenge for Europe. The article notes that for migrants themselves, it is no less a difficult task associated with the perception of a new culture, the creation of social ties, and the achievement of a certain economic status. It is emphasized that the religious factor, which causes deep mental differences, is of key importance. The article, based on the analysis, shows that even before the aggravation of the migration crisis in 2015, it became obvious that the assimilation of migrants through the «melting pot» model is untenable due to the impossibility of their «dissolution» in the host society, while the policy of multiculturalism assumes too much influence of ethnic communities on the mainstream culture. The article states that the practice of «civic integration» is gradually being introduced in Europe to replace multiculturalism, in which migrants are granted a certain level of socio-cultural, religious and economic rights, provided that a balance is maintained between their rights and obligations towards the host community.
