Abstract. The article attempts to analyze the ethnolinguistic situation in the Republic of Mordovia based on a sociological survey. The empirical basis of the article is the results of the applied sociological study «Monitoring the ethnolinguistic situation in the Republic of Mordovia», carried out by the staff of the Scientific Center for Socio-Economic Monitoring in June 2023. The authors examined the spheres of existence of the Mordvin (Moksha and Erzya) and Tatar languages. The study found that a significant part of the population of the republic calls Russian or one of the Mordvin and Tatar languages their native language. Russians living in Mordovia are characterized by an extremely low level of bilingualism and a low level of proficiency in national languages (Moksha and Erzya), which have the status of state languages. The authors note the shortcomings in the quality of education in the Mordvin languages, weak interest of the population in learning their native language (except Russian), the reason for which is the narrow scope of their application, the formal nature of teaching. The results of the study show a low level of use of national languages. The majority of the region’s population speaks Russian, much less often — Russian and one of the national languages. The spheres of application of national languages are insignificant and people do not consider it necessary to use them in a wide social space. The limited sphere of use of the Mordvin and Tatar languages is largely due to objective reasons. All this leads to a completely natural transformation of public consciousness, when a significant part of the ethnic group calls the language of the dominant nation and culture their native language. The authors came to the conclusion that the national language is beginning to «leave» not only public life, but also the everyday sphere.

Keywords: ethnolinguistic situation; language of interethnic communication; state language; national language; native language; bilingualism; linguistic nihilism
