Abstract. Mansi folklore is the richest material for research in the field of folklore, linguistics, ethnography and other sciences. Folklore characters are people, animals, elements, fantastic (mythical) creatures. Each fairy tale has its own set of motives for bodily, physiological and emotional states. One of the bodily conditions is the age category of the heroes. This article analyzes the phases of the life cycle that have not been previously considered by anyone among scientists and researchers of Mansi folklore. The research was based on the texts of Mansi fairy tales published in collections, as well as field materials of the author. When analyzing folklore material, three main age categories were identified — these are children, young people and people of venerable age. Most often, two types appear: young and old. Moreover, the younger generation, in particular the male sex, is subdivided into several more age stages. In the Mansi language, they are referred to as ayumkitum pyg ‘an insignificant, unimportant youth’, tokhtyglam pyg ‘grown up youth’, humyg-yig (literally ‘male beast’). Girls are only at the age of yanyg āgi. The most active child age recorded is kon-khaytygtan yanytyg nȳāvram ‘a child [who has reached] the age of running outside the house (on the street). Infancy is also recorded, but in fairy tales they participate indirectly, as one of the stages of development and growth of the protagonist. The character’s youth is one of the plot-forming elements. In Mansi tales, there is no specific indication of age. Basically, it is indicated indirectly or partially through the name of the character, taking into account his age category.
