Higher education and the labour market: the problem of competitiveness of graduates

Abstract. The author of the article considers the significance of higher education as one of the factors affecting the competitiveness of graduates, including the totality of personal characteristics for social and professional success. Competitiveness involves the formation at future expert of complex of professional qualities that enable him on the basis of their own capabilities, market labour and its socio-economic needs to compete effectively in the market and realize their potential in the workplace.

The work of graduates is an indicator of their demand, because in the first place is determined by the requirements of the market and requirements of employers. The competitiveness of the graduates is an indicator of the competitiveness of universities, including increased requirements to the organization of various activities of the institution, quality of teaching staff, the number of graduates working in the specialty. The actual crisis of overproduction of certain professions in the education system, promotes the growth of closed channels of employment. An integrated approach from the state is needed to solve this problem.

A study conducted by the author suggests that there is a mismatch in the level of development of labor potential of graduates to the criteria of modern competition. This tendency decreases the level of competitiveness of graduates on the labour market.
