Abstract. The article presents the results of Russian online schools research. The goal is to study the reasons why parents choose online schooling for their children. The relevance of this topic is due to the growing popularity of digital didactic approaches and the need to reflect on changing family practices in the field of education for children and young people. The study examines the impact of a student’s age on leaving traditional school and the relevance of online review analysis technology to alternative educational pathways.
The empirical part of the project involved studying online parental reviews about their children’s experiences in online schools. A computer-based content analysis of 60 texts was conducted. The authors have presented a ranking of the reasons why families decided to enroll a student at an online school. There are six groups of statements in the list. The first three groups contain opinions about the advantages of online schooling: the quality of education, the format, and the educational environment. Special attention is paid to teacher professionalism and personalized education.
The following rating groups include the immediate reasons for enrolling in an online school: family issues and student characteristics. It comes to parents’ travel, large families, single parenting, as well as children’s health, personality, age, and extracurricular activities. It has been established that the average and older age of a student is a positive factor in choosing online education. The bottom of the ranking is occupied by the group «Vremya» («Time») which contains opinions about saving the time of students and their families by studying at an online school.
A methodological analysis of online reviews as a technology for collecting sociological data has been conducted. The advantage of this method is its accessibility and information richness, as well as the researcher’s lack of influence on the primary materials. The limitation of this approach is the risk of falsifying reviews.
The research results can be applied in the field of digital education and family policy. Methodological analysis of reviews is useful in teaching sociological disciplines.
Keywords: online schools; students; family choice motives; parental feedback; learning quality; educational environment; personalized educational route; time
