Social aspects of the holy month of Ramadan in Russia

Abstract. The purpose of this study is to identify and examine the social aspects of the holy month of Ramadan in Russia. The research is based on opinion polls and opinions of religious and government figures regarding the number of Muslims in Russia. The author of the article refers to the works of renowned foreign sociologists, theologians and religious scholars, to Islamic sources, in particular to the text of the Koran, which emphasizes the sacred status of the month of Ramadan. The beginning of the article focuses on the importance of the research. The author writes about the relevance of the study, referring to recent opinion polls, according to which the number of Muslims in Russia is increasing every year. Further, the author touches on the phenomena of the sacred in religion and the sacred in Islam, in particular the sacred time. The author focuses on the role of the holy months for the society of pre-Islamic Arabia and their subsequent affirmation in the Quran. The main part of the study examines the phenomenon of the holy month of Ramadan itself: the basis of its sanctity for Muslims, the influence of Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab’s calendar reform on determining the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, the etymology of the word «Ramadan» and the duties of Muslims during Ramadan. It touches upon the deep historical roots of the holy month of Ramadan in Russia, as well as its significance for Russian Muslims. The author identifies and examines in detail six social aspects of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan in Russia. In the final part of the article, the author draws a conclusion about the importance of the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims living in the territory of the Russian Federation.
