Abstract. The article is devoted to the study of precedents as phenomena with the cognitive potential to create hidden and ironic intentions. These phenomena help to achieve a humorous effect. The authors also consider the use of “understatement” as one of the unique parts of British humor. Understatement is represented by indirect, hidden statements, the purpose of which is to have a certain impact on the listener. The authors also claim that precedent phenomena have the cognitive potential to express this function. The problem is that a translator should save the communicative impact of the original text. The article analyses the examples of English-Russian translation and gives some translation strategies.

Keywords: precedent phenomena; understatement; irony; humour; cross-cultural communication; translation; translator’s metacommunicative activity
