Abstract. The article substantiates the relevance of the appeal to the differentiation of the concepts of «fashion» and «fashion industry», defines the need to clarify the difference between fashion as a socially symbolic phenomenon and the fashion industry as a system of economic production and replication. The confusion of these concepts leads to the reduction of fashion to a production and market mechanism and, as a result, to ignoring the social processes through which both the reputation of the country and the identity, prestige of the brand and the individual are constructed. The differentiation of these concepts makes it possible to more accurately describe the relationship between the symbolic existence of fashion and its institutional embodiment in commercial form, as well as to identify the specifics of fashion as a «special field of cultural production» (Bourdieu, 1996). In this context, fashion acts not only as a system of production and consumption of goods, but also as a space for the formation of values, differences and mechanisms of social recognition, whereas the fashion industry is a set of economic, organizational and infrastructural practices that ensure the material production, distribution and monetization of relevant symbolic meanings. For modern Russia, this distinction takes on additional significance: historical inheritance, territorial centralization, and institutional weakness create special conditions in which symbolic practices and commercial structures enter into complex, often conflicting relationships. The authors note that the further development of the Russian fashion industry requires a separate strategic framework that takes into account the regional specifics of its formation.
