Abstract. The world and historical experience of mentoring shows that the development of this social institution leads to the development of society as a whole and accelerates economic and other processes within it, which creates a complex positive effect. Mentoring, as a social phenomenon, is conditioned by the need for personal development, problem solving at the state and regional level. Currently, the role of mentoring is growing due to the increasing needs of society for highly educated personnel with a developed work culture and high integration abilities.

A specific characteristic of mentoring at the present stage is its relationship with the development of competencies, both mentors and mentees. Modern society imposes new requirements on mentors’ competencies. The ongoing changes contribute to the transformation of mentoring as a social institution. It is important to consider the types and functions of social mentoring in the context of the present, their transformation taking into account current challenges and requirements. Objective: to identify current challenges and requirements for the implementation of mentoring. Research methodology — analysis of the current state of the mentoring institute, identification of prospects and problems. Mentoring is implemented in various fields and is aimed at personal development, social and educational self-determination, professional choice, social and professional adaptation, self-education. Within the framework of this study, it is impossible to cover all areas and areas in which mentoring is carried out. However, it is fundamentally important to note that mentoring allows you to fill in the missing resources and solve problems that other social institutions cannot cope with.

As a result, the importance of mentoring as a social phenomenon in the context of solving problems in various fields is substantiated, development prospects and existing deficits are identified.
