Abstract. The article is devoted to the issue of genre classification of Mansi folklore, which is currently the subject of discussion. To date, a number of genres of Mansi folklore have not been unambiguously defined, genre boundaries separating some genres from others have not been defined, genre differences are not presented, there is no scientific systematization of Mansi folklore based on the achievements of academic science. These difficulties are due to the relevance of the research undertaken.
The article attempts to analyze the contribution of domestic and foreign researchers studying the category of genre, genre theory of folklore, and the definition of criteria for the allocation of genre systems of folklore. To date, based on the academic classical works of V.Y. Propp, A.N. Veselovsky, B.N. Putilov, E.M. Meletinsky and others. in Mansi folklore, such genres of Mansi narrative folklore as fairy tale, legend, and legend are definitely distinguished, the boundaries of which are established. The issue of establishing and defining the boundaries of other genres remains open and requires separate research.
The correct and adequate systematization of folklore genres contributes to a convenient and transparent study of the works of oral folk art of Mansi, the practical significance of the study lies in the fact that its results will contribute to the development of Mansi and Ob-Ugric folklore studies and can be used in the development of reference books, methodological and teaching aids, preparation and publication of folklore collections, conducting new scientific research.
