Abstract. The article deals with the problem of professional self-determination of University students. A brief review of the works of modern authors who have devoted their works to the analysis of the studied problem is made, the conclusion is made about the need to monitor the main motives, incentives, values and interests of young people regarding their future professional activities (including using sociological tools). On the basis of a specific sociological study conducted by the method of formalized interviews, the main problems and contradictions of the process of professional self-determination are revealed. In particular, it was found that only a third of the students consider their future professional sphere prestigious, employment as non-prestigious types of work is often due to a sense of duty, the desire to continue the family dynasty, awareness of the importance of this activity for society. Interest in future professional activity is most intense among students studying foreign languages. Less expressed professional interests of students engaged in exact and social Sciences. As the basic motives of choice of place of studies highlighted the proximity to home and availability of budget places. Cognitive motives play a lesser role. Some respondents emphasize the need to obtain a diploma of higher education to gain status in society. There is a correlation between the profile of student training and the presence of specific motives for professional training. It is assumed that the problems of professional self-determination of students lie in the weak career guidance and educational work, insufficient connection of educational institutions with the bases of practices, some disregard for the interests and personal characteristics of students, low prevalence of interactive learning.
