Abstract. The article discusses the linguistic and pragmatic specificity of the spatial categorization of literary texts: on the basis of the cognitive-semantic and linguistic and pragmatic analysis of the stories of A.P. Chekhov’s «The Lady with the Dog» and «The Student» approve the idea of the uniqueness of the artistic space, since reality is represented through the author’s perception based on the dominants of the individual author’s picture of the world, while the literary text also contains the points of view of the hero and the narrator. The main task of the linguistic study of artistic space in the text is to identify ways to actualize this category using linguistic units. For the stories of A.P. Chekhov is characterized, for the most part, by the representation of the position of the hero, and linguistic ways of realizing spatial categorization are very diverse: the main representatives of spatial relations in a literary text are prepositional-case forms of nouns with the semantics of space, toponyms, verbs of movement and spatial semantics, adverbs of place, syntactic constructions with spatial significance. It has been established that spatial categorization in a literary text is dual in nature: in case of subjective conditioning, it operates with objectively existing linguistic means that function in the language system precisely in terms of space marking. In the course of studying the literary texts of Chekhov’s stories, it was also determined that the boundaries of the types of models of space are changeable; synthesis of various models of space, priority for the texts of stories by A.P. Chekhov, generates an additional spatial model — the model of philosophical space. This model is based on the spatial coordinates of the world external to the heroes, but the ontological meanings generated with its help are indirectly related to spatial categorization: they are implied in a literary text and require additional cognitive efforts for their decoding.
