Abstract. The All-Russian Scientific and Practical Conference «Anthropology of Reading: Cultural Meanings, Discourses, Ritual Practices», which was held in Magnitogorsk, Chelyabinsk Region in April 2018, is covered. The organizers were: «Association of city libraries» in Magnitogorsk, a laboratory of folk culture, as well as a library complex «Magnitogorsk State Technical University». The event devoted to reading and the book concentrated 62 reports, about twenty occupations and specialties of guests, several generations of participants, including seven age groups. In five sections, problem points, positive reading practices, vectors of socio-cultural and library activities were discussed.

Among the reports of the plenary session were speeches of colleagues from St. Petersburg: Golovin V., Nikolaev O., related to the directions of studying reading, reading the textbook text of Russian literature, ways of presenting the book.

The topic of the conference was supported by the acting in the Central City Library from April 19 to May 21, the exhibition «A Man Reading: A Book and Reading in the Life of the City». The organizers developed thematic modules («Reading Practices», «Reading Space», «Reading as a Profession»). As a result of the event, the Organizing Committee decided to hold similar conferences on the anthropology of reading every two years.
