The article examines the history of the study of phraseological units in linguistics, which is an urgent topic today. Phraseological units are common both in spoken and written speech. Knowledge of phraseological units allows you to understand what the interlocutor wants to say using a particular phraseological unit or what is being discussed in works written in different styles. The article discusses issues related to ambiguous aspects of the semantics of phraseological units, as well as the functional potential of phraseological units. The author highlights important aspects of the study of this science: the stability, consistency and semantic structure of phraseological units, their origin and main functions by analyzing the scientific works of such prominent scientists as V.V. Vinogradov, N.M. Shansky, V.N. Telii, A.V. Kunin, S.G. Gavrin and many others.
The author notes that a complex branch of phraseology is the translation of phraseological units, which requires considerable experience in the field of research in this discipline. Metaphoricity, emotionality, expressivity — all these qualities of phraseological units give speech imagery and expressiveness. The author emphasizes that phraseology appears in the language not for the names of objects, signs, and actions, but for their figurative and emotional characteristics. Phraseological units are formed on the basis of a specific meaning inherent in them in a free phrase. Semantic renewal occurs due to a more free figurative use from a specific meaning to an abstract one.
