Abstract. The article analyzes the theoretical aspects of gender from the perspective of various sciences. The authors of the article consider the interpretation of this term in the works of domestic researchers, as a result of which it is determined that gender is some properties of role behavior that distinguish a woman from a man and vice versa, but their difference depends not only on biological, but also on social conditions (social division of labor, specific social functions, cultural stereotypes, etc.). Modern sociology has revealed that there is no pure masculinity and femininity, either in the biological or psychological sense. There were four gender role types that are characteristic of men and women: masculine, feminine, androgynous and undifferentiated. This suggests that the dichotomy of «man-woman» in modern society is being smoothed out. Modern humanities increasingly raise the question of the gender picture of our society. It is known that one of the most important tools for forming the foundations of this picture in the minds of people is the mass media, which broadcast certain standards of masculinity and femininity, the socio-cultural role of men and women. As a result of the study of the phenomenon of «gender» in journalism, the authors of the article come to the reasonable conclusion that the role of mass media in the formation of gender is very significant. The following trends in the transformation of gender roles and their representation in the press can be distinguished: gender polarization; neotraditionalism; the emergence of new egalitarian models of gender patterns. Mass media — more successful promotion of an adequate representation of gender and equal relations between men and women.
