Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of representation of cohesion in the language of the mass media. Cohesion is considered by the author as one of the most significant textual categories which contribute to the theme development, text integrity, its form and meaning formation. The review of the main linguistic research papers devoted to the study of cohesion has been suggested. The study of correlation of the notions «cohesion» and «coherence» has not been the aim of our paper.

The works devoted to the study of cohesion as a linguistic phenomenon continue to be a promising area of research based on the material of various types of text and discourse. The topicality of the present study is due to the fact the current stage of development of linguistics is characterized by increasing interest in the strategic planning of text in the mass media. Studying the specifics of the construction of newspaper and journalistic texts allows us to get closer to understanding how exactly the shape individual and collective patterns of behavior in society.

The article provides the most illustrative examples of means of coherence from the English newspaper and journalistic texts in online format. The analysis has showed that among the syntactic-grammatical means of coherence, the use of conjunctions predominates, and among the lexical means of communication, hyperonymic repetition and full lexical repetition dominate. At the same time, it is necessary to emphasize that the means of cohesion, as a rule, are used in combination and are dispersed throughout the text. In the process of research, it was established that cohesion not only explicates the logical, temporal, spatial sequence, interdependence of individual messages, facts, actions, but is also a key tool in the formation of public opinion regarding current problems.
