Abstract. The aim of the research is to identify the peculiarities of fixed noun-preposition collocations in Aviation English. The following article is devoted to the description of prepositional collocations with the preposition in as one of the most frequent groups which function in English aviation discourse. The urgency of the field-specific research is determined by the insufficient contemporary study of the English prepositions’ functioning in various types of discourse and their role in the construction of fixed linguistic collocations. In modern linguistics, there is no unified point of view on the issues related to the study of the function nature of the English prepositions which represent the earliest lexical layer of the language. The author considers the linguistic peculiarities of English function words from the position of syntagmatic and paradigmatic approaches, which allows to determine the place and the role of prepositions in word-formation processes more accurately, and at the same time takes into account the results of linguists who establish connections between linguistic categories and perception of the outer world. The article describes the mechanism of formation of the studied lexical units and gives their classification according to structural and semantic features. As a result of the research four groups of fixed noun-preposition collocations with the preposition in were identified at the functional level: adverbal; adjectival-noun-preposition; postpositional and prepositional units. At the semantic level, the preposition in demonstrates antonymic and synonymic relations which allow it to form a special semantic-syntactic group of noun-preposition collocations in English aviation discourse. This level is represented by the following groups: noun-preposition collocations with local meaning; noun-preposition collocations denoting process and noun-preposition temporal collocations.

Keywords: lexical unit; fixed collocations; noun-preposition relation; preposition; aviation English; structural and semantic features; syntagmatic; paradigmatic; aviation discourse
